Study Abroad and Travel Experiences

The CSD department strives to offer a short-term international experience at least once per year as an additional opportunity for self-discovery, personal growth, and learning. Through travel, students can learn about themselves, other cultures, and clinical practices in a different cultural setting.

Upcoming CSD study abroad experiences:

  • CSD Therapy Abroad in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Dominica

The CSD department at Illinois State University offers a study abroad opportunity specifically geared towards SLP and AUD graduate students. Travel with Therapy Abroad and faculty members of ISU CSD to beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the island country of Dominica. This winter break program is designed for SLP and AUD graduate students to gain hands-on experience and observations through evaluation and treatment, partake in interprofessional collaboration, and develop a better understanding of global issues. You will spend a total of 10 days (January 2, 2025 – January 11, 2025) between the two countries. The first two days of the trip will be spent collaborating with SLP graduate students from Albizu University in San Juan, Puerto Rico. You will then travel to the island country of Dominica where you will spend the next 8 days working directly with both pediatric and adult clients in a variety of settings including private clinics, home health, nursing facilities, and local schools. Students typically receive between 10 - 12 direct contact hours in treatment and evaluation which will count towards your overall clock hours needed for graduation. This is an excellent opportunity for group travel with faculty-led programs that are structured and designed exclusively for professional experiences in speech-language pathology. The faculty leaders for this trip include Amy Yacucci, Lindsay Diekhoff, and Jaime Ellsworth.
